Mamaw Jean’s Angel Quilts

My Mamaw Jean loved kids. She was Mamaw to a lot of my friends, as well as me. She taught me to quilt, and she gave her quilts generously to all her family members and friends.

I’ve quietly offered T-shirt quilts to children who have lost a parent in my native Breathitt county for several years now. I’ve also offered it to friends who have, unfortunately, found themselves in that position. I also have offered it to people who have lost a child. I’m not posting this to toot my own horn - I’ve actually done very, very few of those quilts I’ve offered. I post this only to tell you how you can nominate a child (or parent) for a Mamaw Jean Angel quilt.

I offer, free of charge, a 6 shirt lap quilt to any child in Breathitt, Estill or Madison county KY, who has lost a parent - be it cancer, a car accident, etc.

This quilt retails for $195.  If the child wants a larger size, a discount of $195 applies to any size quilt I make. (I.E., if a kiddo wants a queen size quilt (which is $375), they could get that queen size quilt for $180.

If you want to sponsor a angel quilt, you can do so for $60. It is not necessary for children in Breathitt, Estill or Madison counties to have a sponsor. For anyone outside of those counties, a sponsor IS necessary. This is mainly so I know for sure that the child qualifies for a free quilt, which, not to be harsh, will require an obituary/news article to be supplied. If they’re in my home counties I can easily verify it, but outside of those counties I do require some proof. The $60 sponsorship covers my materials for the quilt. As of right now (July 2024) I will only be taking 5 angel quilts on in any given calendar year. Angel quilts will be added to my list just like regular orders, so it may be 3-6 months before I get to that quilt in line. I’ll try to expedite as much as I can, but I very rarely have a short turn around time.
